Cost comparison of femoral head banking versus bone substitutes

چکیده
Purpose. To compare the costs of femoral head banking versus bone substitutes. Methods. Records of femoral head banking from 1998 to 2008 were reviewed. The cost of allogenic cancellous bone graft was calculated by estimating the direct expenditure of femoral head procurement, screening tests, and storage, and then divided by the amount of bone harvested. Results. 326 females and 141 males (mean age, 80.3 years) donated 470 femoral heads. Each transplantable femoral head costs US$978. Each gram of transplantable allogenic bone graft costs US$86, compared with US$9 to 26 per gram for commercially available bone substitutes. Conclusion. Compared with bone substitutes, femoral head banking in Hong Kong was less economical. Unless allografts yield superior outcomes, harvesting femoral heads for general usage (such as filling bone voids for fresh fractures) is not justified from a financial perspective, especially in banks dedicated to Cost comparison of femoral head banking versus bone substitutes Hon-Bong Leung,1 Margaret Woon-Man Fok,1 Lorraine Chi-Yan Chow,2 Chi-Hung Yen3 1 Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong 2 Department of Surgery, Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong 3 Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Kwong Wah Hospital, Hong Kong Address correspondence and reprint requests to: Dr Hon-Bong Leung, Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Queen Mary Hospital, Pokfulam, Hong Kong. Background: Femoral head osteonecrosis is a progressive disease with disabling outcomes in hip joint if not treated. This study was designed to compare the effects of zoledronic acid plus vitamin E versus zoledronic acid alone insurgical induced femoral head osteonecrosis in rabbits. Methods: 26 Japanese white adult normal male rabbits at 28-32 weeks old were undertaken surgical femoraldislocatio...
متن کاملAvascular Necrosis of the Femoral Head: Are Any Genes Involved?
Avascular necrosis of the femoral head (ANFH) is a pathologic process that results from interruption of blood supply to the femur bone resulting in the death of bone cells and collapse of the femoral head. Nontraumatic ANFH continuesto be a significant challenge to orthopedic surgeons. While the exact mechanisms remain elusive, many new insights have emerged from research in the last decade tha...

This study assessed factors responsible for exclusion of patients from bone donation at primary hip arthroplasty in order to improve bone banking. Fifty-five patients underwent screening in preoperative clinics assessing their suitability for femoral head donation. Records at the bone bank were then reviewed post operatively to check whether bone had been harvested from these individuals during...
متن کاملSubchondral Insufficiency Fracture of the Femoral Head Treated with Core Decompression and Bone Void Filler Support
Subchondral insufficiency fracture of the femoral head (SIFFH) is characterized by acute onset hip pain without overt trauma. It appears as a low intensity band with bone marrow edema on T1-weighted MRI. The most common course of treatment is protected weight bearing for a period of several weeks. Total hip arthroplasty (THA) has been commonly used if the patient does not respond to the initial...
